Well-being,
charcoal and acrylic on paper, 42” x 42”, 2008
The following is what I believe I heard Sunday night, May 25, 2008, when asking God what to draw/paint for Joey Reiman. Literally I wrote down, "Garden hose with birds or fish; toy pool; boy with rubber boots".
I immediately envisioned a boy wearing rubber boots standing in a plastic kiddy pool holding a garden hose. He's pointing the hose up into the air spraying water up like a fountain. His eyes are glowing in wonder at the water as fish and birds fly out of the hose; birds flying away, fish falling into the pool. After reading Ps 51 the concept of washing and cleansing made me think of the water coming out of the hose as God's living water cleansing the boy. Living water led me to Proverbs 4:23, "guard your heart for it is the well spring of life" and Jeremiah 2:13, "For My people have committed a double evil: They have abandoned Me, the fountain of living water, and dug cisterns for themselves, cracked cisterns that don't hold water." I remember Joey mentioning his concept of "well-being" from the mp3 and put the two together. The Holy Spirit within us, God's fountain of living water, visibly represented as creative imagination with a child/child-like faith.
After thoughts....
Proverbs 20:5 also speaks of the depths of a man like a well and wisdom and understanding like a bucket. I wrote the word "well-being" in colored squares across the drawing using my color alphabet which is also what I've chosen to title this drawing.
